IELTS Writing Task 1 Bar Chart — How to Write a Band 7 Answer

Step-by-step guide to writing a Band 7 bar chart response in IELTS Writing Task 1, with a full sample answer and examiner comments.

writingtask-1

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, you must describe visual information in your own words. The bar chart is one of the most common graphic types tested. To secure a Band 7 or higher, you need to structure your response perfectly and make clear, descriptive comparisons rather than just listing numbers.

The Standard 4-Paragraph Structure

For any Task 1 graphic, always use this reliable four-paragraph layout:

  1. Paragraph 1: Introduction (Paraphrase the Prompt)
Rewrite the question in your own words using synonyms. For example, change "shows the consumption of" to "illustrates the amount of food eaten by".
  2. Paragraph 2: Overview (Main Trends)
Identify the two most prominent features of the chart. Do not include any specific numbers or data points here. A clear overview is mandatory to score Band 6 or higher.
  3. Paragraph 3: Detailed Paragraph 1 (Highest / Increasing Data)
Describe the highest categories or the ones showing significant increases, supporting your statements with specific numbers and years.
  4. Paragraph 4: Detailed Paragraph 2 (Lowest / Decreasing Data)
Describe the remaining categories, pointing out comparisons and contrasts.

Band 7+ Sample Response

Prompt: The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households with internet access in three countries (UK, India, and the Philippines) from 2015 to 2025.

"The bar chart compares the proportion of residential properties with internet connectivity in the United Kingdom, India, and the Philippines over a ten-year period starting from 2015.

Overall, it is clear that internet access rose significantly in all three nations over the decade. Additionally, households in the United Kingdom consistently maintained the highest rates of connectivity, while India recorded the lowest throughout the entire period.

In 2015, the UK led with approximately 82% of households having internet access. This figure grew steadily to reach a peak of 96% by 2025. Similarly, connectivity in the Philippines started at a moderate 45% in 2015 and experienced a substantial increase of thirty percentage points, finishing at 75% in the final year.

In contrast, Indian households had the lowest connectivity rates, starting at a mere 15% in 2015. However, this country experienced the fastest growth rate, with household internet access nearly tripling to reach 44% by 2025."

Examiner Comments

This response scores a Band 7.5 because it has a **clear, dedicated overview paragraph** (Paragraph 2), groups the data logically, and uses appropriate comparison structures (e.g., "rose significantly," "experienced the fastest growth," "in contrast").
