Table of Contents
IELTS Speaking Part 1 is the warm-up section of the speaking test. The examiner will ask you simple questions about your daily life, such as your home, your job, your studies, your hobbies, or your hometown. This section lasts about 4 to 5 minutes. While the questions are simple, your answers should not be too short. To score a Band 7, you need to extend your answers naturally using the **Answer + Reason + Detail** formula.
The ARD Formula
For every Part 1 question, follow this simple three-sentence structure:
- A - Answer: Answer the question directly with a complete sentence. (Do not just say "Yes" or "No").
- R - Reason: Explain WHY you feel this way.
- D - Detail/Example: Give an extra detail, habit, or example from your life.
10 Model Questions and Answers
Here are 3 high-frequency topics with model answers following the ARD formula:
Question 1: Do you work or study?
Model Answer: Currently, I am working as a registered nurse in a public hospital in Manila. I have been in this position for nearly three years, and my main responsibilities involve caring for patients in the emergency ward. In the future, I hope to relocate to the UK to continue my professional nursing career.
Question 2: What do you like most about your hometown?
Model Answer: The aspect I appreciate the most about my hometown is the close-knit community spirit. Even though it is a bustling suburb in Lagos, everyone knows their neighbors and helps each other out. For instance, we frequently organize community street markets during the weekends.
Question 3: Do you prefer reading books on paper or on a screen?
Model Answer: I definitely prefer reading traditional paper books over digital screens. I find that holding a physical book is much more engaging, and it also prevents my eyes from getting strained after long hours of studying. I try to read at least one chapter of a physical novel every evening before sleeping.
