IELTS General Writing Task 1: How to Write a Formal Letter (Band 7 Template)

Master IELTS General Training Task 1 formal letters with this Band 7 template, three sample letters, and examiner tips.

writinggeneral

For candidates taking the IELTS General Training test, Writing Task 1 requires you to write a letter of at least 150 words. There are three types of letters: formal, semi-formal, and informal. A formal letter is written to someone you do not know, such as a company manager, a university head, or a local council representative. To secure a Band 7, you must follow the correct formal structures and use appropriate, polite vocabulary throughout.

The Formal Letter Framework

A formal letter must always include the following structural elements:

  1. Salutation: Always start with "Dear Sir or Madam," since you do not know the recipient's name.
  2. Opening Statement: State the purpose of your letter immediately. For example: "I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with..." or "I am writing to apply for the position of...".
  3. Three Bullet Points: Address each of the three bullet points in the prompt in separate, logical paragraphs.
  4. Sign-off Formula: End with "Yours faithfully," followed by a formal name. Never use informal closings like "Best regards," or "Cheers,".

Here is a highly effective, customizable template for a **Complaint Letter**:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to formally complain about the service I received at your establishment on [Date]. I am highly disappointed with the experience and would like to request immediate assistance to resolve this issue.

[Paragraph 2: Describe the first bullet point—what went wrong].

[Paragraph 3: Describe the second bullet point—the consequences or problems this caused you].

[Paragraph 4: Describe the third bullet point—what action you want them to take, e.g. a refund or replacement].

I look forward to your prompt response regarding this matter.

Yours faithfully,
